Chickens sleeping In run

Mine have taken quite a liking to the three tier cat climber I put in their run. They all huddle together on the top tier pretty much every night, at least for a while. When I first put them in the run, their coop wasn't quite finished. I still had to put in the nest boxes that will extend outside the coop, so I closed up that opening with chicken wire and a board to secure it from rain and wind. There were no roosts inside, but, I covered the floor with a deep layer of bedding. I keep their feeder in the coop and their waterer in the run. We also put a tarp over the run to protect it from rain, it was already fully enclosed with chicken wire.

At first they just stayed out in the run except to grab a bite to eat. They slept in a bunch on the top tier of the cat climber. Then I finally got around to putting in a couple of make-shift roosts. It was cold, rainy, and windy that night, and I was fretting most of the night that they were cold and wet, and I checked on them around 4 or 5 am just to find that they had all made their way inside where I had their heat lamp on just in case. They were warm and dry and happy.

They still start out on the cat climber most nights, but, usually end up inside the coop. Now I have four more to introduce to the coop, and then we should be good for a while, at least until we have to introduce them to the nest boxes. Never a dull moment.
