I've noticed some of my hens are missing feather right underneath their crop and where their missing feathers the skin is flakey and scabby. I also have some hens that are missing feathers starting right underneath their beaks and going down to the crop. Is it mites? Or something related to that? How do I help them?

As a precaution I sprayed the coop down with water, dish soap, and cooking oil to kill any mites in there. And later tonight, I’m going to spray the chickens down with an essential oil mixture which is water, lemon, eucalyptus, cinnamon bark, lavender, grapefruit, lemon grass, and clove.

Can you post some photos of the bare spots and scabs?

If you suspect external parasites, it is best to treat with a Permethrin based poultry spray or dust to get them under control.

Evaluate how much space you have, feather picking can also be part of the problem. Observe your flock for any behavioral issues.

I can't get pictures at the moment as I am heading out of town in a couple minutes, when I get back I'm going to set up a Wood ash/Sand bath inside the coop, and I have about 310 Square feet of run space, and about 150 Square feet of indoor coop space. I have 28 chickens.
