We had ducks but an unfortunate incident with a rather large owl left us with no ducks. Our ducks were not really all that friendly or lovable to be totally honest. They were incredibly messy compared to the chickens, and kind of a nightmare in regard to watering over the winter since they splash like crazy...not great times when they manage to freeze your feed room door shut. I thought they were absolutely adorable, but I have zero plans to get any ducks in the future, I prefer the chickens.

Good to know I was actually considering Ducks but still unsure....

I have both ducks and chickens, I love them both equally but they are very different. The ducks are quite independent and just spend the day walking in a line and quacking or else they are in their pond. The chickens on the other hand always want to be where I am and are constantly under foot.

That being said the chickens put themselves to bed early every night and the ducks won't go in until I tell them to, usually around 11pm

Agree when it comes to shutting up the coops at night. The chickens happily do it all on their own. The ducks won't go to bed till you tell them to.

If you want quiet ducklings (and later ducks) get muscovies! My ducklings are very quiet. A few peeps, but nothing loud.
I have chickens and got them when they were already a year and two years old. They like me well enough and I am glad I have them. The ducklings I have only had for about 2 weeks. They are 3 weeks old and growing fast. I spot clean the brooder every day. But, I also spot clean the coop everyday too.
I think it is a toss up. There are pros and cons to owning any type of bird.
