Chickens water freezing

Yep I too carry fresh water out each day. As long as the chickens are down on floor and milling around the water doesn't freeze. I bring in the waterers each night and fill and carry them back out each morning. Good exercise right along with carrying those buckets of feed..

We have had many days in the negative temps, going down to -30* or so. No frozen water. Love the tins.

We've had excellent luck with electric dog bowls, raised on a patio block supported by cinder blocks.

This year I put it in a rubber stock bowl and it stays clean because the hens perch on the rubber and keep their bottoms turned out.

Available at WalMart, various hardware and tack stores and Tractor Supply, also at Princess Auto.

I'm having the same problem. This morning I brought out a waterer with fresh water from indoors and set it up in the run. By the time I'd finished chicken chores and indoor bird chores (about an hour), the water had iced over. The indoor waterer is also developing ice crystals down at floor level. If I use warm/hot water, it takes a bit longer for it to freeze up.

On the positive side, we'll only have to deal with this for a couple of days. It's supposed to be back to normal with daytime temps in the 50's by Sunday. I really sympathise with you northern chicken keepers having to deal with cold routinely.

Here in my part of BC we have few cold snaps a year (think -20*C). I bring them warm water a few times a day.

i get minus 20 quite often in winter where I am. It's staying at about minus 6 lately though.
My birds get warm water from the tap, once or twice a day, depends on how cold it is. they get a 10 litre drinker outside and a 5litre inside. I always empty the drinkers at night to save trying to pry them apart in the morning.

i use those indestructable black rubber bowls, i let them freeze over night and stomp on them to get the ice out. a few of my coops have heated waterers but they can be a pain.

honestly i dont do any of what you guys do.... i plugged a heat lamp in and clamped it to the chain that hangs my waterer (it hangs off the ground to keep dirt out) since i've done this my water has yet to freeze!!

and my chickies can still stay warm by sleeping around the waterer (for some reason none of my chickens roost).

no need to spend money on any type of heater waterer!! just a heat lamp and a clear heat bulb.

I have a birdbath heater that I put in a rubber dish. It was cheaper than a heated waterer or a "specially designed" water heater for chickens. It works great!
