Does anyone else out there find that chicken illness seems to come in bursts?? I had a chicken a few monthe back with a very badly swollen eye, pussy looking and had to be dispatched in case of infection to the others. My cockerel over the last week or so has been treated for a watery goey eye. I have been rinsing his eye and giving him Tylan in his water. When I went out tonight to shut them in and have a check of them I have found another hen, her eye is all swollen and closed. Any ideas as to what could be causing this? Feel as if things are stacked against me tonight, the more hens you have the more illness you have to deal with I suppose

a friend of my dad gave him 20 bantams. a month later about half of them had swollen, crusty eyes. 2-3 died within a week. we couldn't find any antibiotic nearby so i ordered some veterycin opthamlic gel. it helped some but not all. my other chickens were not affected by this eye disease either. i don't know if it was something bantams are prone to get or what. it sucked and was very frustrating. do a search here and you'll get all kinds of answers. i think the best thing to do is take one to a vet and let them figure it out.

my dad eventually gave the ones that lived away. i have no idea if they ever got over it.

The same thing happened to my roo. I irrigated the eye with syringe filled with saline then put "chlorsig" topical antibiotic eye drops in the affected eye. I also put him on a course of water soluble antibiotics for 10 days. That was 3 x months ago , haven't had any probs since then.
Fingers crossed I don't see it again.
