chickens with coccidiosis

Have you searched the forum for symptoms of cocci?
If they are eating and drinking, and acting healthy....the small redish spots could be cecal like someone else said....search the forum for the "poop page" there is a link floating around here with pictures of "normal" poop- might be good to compare.

I agree that the apple cider vinegar is good, I've not had to deal with cocci, but i use 1 Teaspoon per gallon of water for them a few times a week.....I might would use 1 Tabelspoon if i knew something was wrong....it's good for their digestion and immune system. Is it really hot where you are? My girls tend to act a little lathargic in the heat and i will usually give them some VERY carefully diluted electrolytes in their water when it gets above 90 degrees. You have to read those electrolyte packages carefully, since too much can actually kill them. Each brand has different instructions for dilution. Some have you make a "stock solution" and then further dilute that in their waterer.

You could also try giving them some vitamins if you are worried. Poly-vi-sol baby vitamins WITHOUT IRON....you can get them at the drug store....drizzle a little along their beak line once a day for a few days to give them a boost, don't do it for too long as I've read too many vitamins can dehydrate them. I would not continue to medicate them if you are not sure it is cocci. From what i've read, if you do indeed have cocci, they should be getting much worse and you should be loosing birds. Maybe post a picture of their poop, then someone could say if it looks unusual....but check out the poop page as well.

good luck!

Jacmac, chicken poop is supposed to have white in it, that is the urine. Start a new thread under emergencies, and list all the details you can, your hens age, food, how long this has been going on, her housing, etc......maybe you will get some answers.

Did you ever figure out what it was? Mine do the same thing!!! My girls are 5-6 months old. They each had caramel-colored runny smelly poo. I had two birds that were asleep on their feet all of a sudden. One had poo-problems so bad there was nothing left. Her entire rear-end was crusty with fecal matter. It was awful. I took them to the vet (rather than culling them, which would have broken my heart). He found coccidia and a secondary bacterial infection. I started medication immediately. The girls all snapped back after a few days. I had all with solid poos. I bleached coop and grounds around the coop-yard. After a few days off medication, I noticed symptoms returning (although no weak birds, just funny stool patterns and napping). I started another round of medication and bleached out coop and yard again.
Is it possible for the birds to keep re-infecting themselves? Is there any way to prevent this? I was told not to eat eggs until birds were off medication for 5 days. My girls aren't laying yet. I feel like at least 3 should be. Can coccidiosis prevent a bird from being able to lay? I have been obsessed with the bloody looking residue in the stools. I am becoming obsessed with solving the problem. What else can I do?

No MOre Boys... how are your birds now?

I just started with chickens about 4 weeks ago and got 4 birds from 4-8 monthsof age. I have noticed in past week that there is a lot of loose poops in the cage that look like cecal poops but they are having them daily or twice a day ( What i can find says they shoudl have one like this once a week)
And once in a while there is a normal poop with a little red in it.

I am going to add the apple cider vinegar to the water going forward and see if that helps. Otherwise they appear to be acting normal.

Your apple cider vinegar MUST be organic with the mother in it. it can usually be found in the organic food section of your grocery store.
