How young are her hens and has she recently acquired them or has she recently added new flock members? Enquiring in case it may be a coccidiosis overload/outbreak.my friend has 2 young hens and yesterday they started just laying down and they wont stand up their heads are drooping kind of like they are drifting off to sleep im wondering what this could be and is there anything we can do for the girls?
Has she added new flock members? How cold has it been and how many birds does she have? Any other symptoms such as discharge from eyes/nostrils,sneezing,coughing? Any issues with vent area, any issues with their crop? Any other birds showing any sign of feeling unwell?nah one is a year old and the other is 2 years old they are mother and daughter hens she has had them since they were chicks
Yes,the hens may have a coccidiosis overload/outbreak due to new chickens being added to flock. Yes,it can be spread by our own clothes/hands/shoes/etc.The hens had bad diarrhea as well. My friends father recently got some new bantams and i was wondering if hens can get coccidiosis from a human because they may have got it from my friends father. I got some coccidiosis and diarrhea medication and forced the hens to drink some water with the meds in it. One of them doesnt look good at all i think she might die. They had a lot of mites. Im going to drop some mite powder off to her tomorrow. I had to have a long shower and wash my clothes just to get the mites off and i didnt want my ducks to get sick either
I forget what the medication was called but it treats coccidiosis and diarrhea in large birds (i couldn't get the proper kind for poultry yet because the feed store is closed). Its summer here in australia so its really warm outside so i don't think them being cold is an issue. These are the first chickens she has ever had so she doesn't know very much about them. I have told her over and over again to buy mite powder for them but she never does so i will have to buy some for her as a birthday present if the chickens survive
