People are under the misguided thought that chickens are filthy animals , when in fact it isn't the chicken that isn't clean its usually the owner not cleaning up.
Not saying its anyone but speaking in general.
this is where a lot of these rules regulations and laws come from.
all it takes is one person with bodies, smell, poor husbandry, and unclean coops to spoil it for a whole town.

that said.
I tried looking up the zoning and laws in your area and came up with a web site for the town that tells you nothing.
if you have a link I can read through and see where it can be argued or maybe fixed.
with out looking at the actual zoning laws I am dead in the water.
like Darlene mentioned gt a hold of that reporter and see what she comes up with also.
just keep in mind sometimes news reports help the cause and sometimes they hurt the cause.

either they dont want to post their estrctions on animals and such or I just cant find it. I have looked through everything on the site and can find nothing on farm, livestock or pets on that site.

I'm located right in the center of town and zoned "general residential" and am allowed farm animals on my 1/3 acre. I have to get a stable permit for the 3 ponies and a livestock permit for the chickens but have had no trouble the 12 years I've had the permits. No one around me has farm animals. I've known people in just "residential" zone that were denied permits. Gather your information together on the actual town rules and then go about pulling info together showing you are conforming to the rules. Good luck!

It is in there, it's sort of said in code, but it's there. I read it yesterday. I had heard this before, but was told through descreet inquiry that no one was ever fined or reported for it. I wasn't reported by a neighbor. I'm almost positive it was the owner of the duplex next door. They don't even live there, but it's way to big a concidence that this happened right after they were here for the first time in a long time. We are going to put the stockaid fence up on that side this weekend. There are quite a few people in town that have chickens and there is no way they have 5 acres. I am really hoping that if I push, the town will not want to push back, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they did want to push back just for the heck of it. I told DH I wanted to win the lotery so I could buy 5 acres right in the middle of down town and start a rooster and pig farm. I'm kinda angry...

I agree that it's because people think chickens stink. I keep their area very clean...have to as the dogs share that side, so I pick up after both of them. I could understand if that wasn't the case and they sent the health inspector or animal control to check the chickens living conditions or told me to clean it up or whatever...but not to get rid of them.

It seems like under Article 97 I will have some protection, but it means that I have to claim the chickens as "agriculture" and not as pets...which means if I lose that I can't then say they are pets I guess...but it's a gamble either way.

Does anyone know, do the Obama's have chickens now?

No, not that I know of, but when they do, I am sure everyone in America will have them, and if they are illegal chickens, they will bre granted immunity and allowed to apply for working papers too!

Hey, if Bob Kratft got permission to keep his in Wellesly, Mass. then why not you too.? I would also call the NECN channel and speak with Vicky, she does the show The secrtet lif of Animals and would be more than happy to help you ause she was just doing several shows regarding such a matter. A lot of times it is people ignorance and those same people have a friend or relative on a commitee where the village idiots meet at the topwn hall and they have no other important things to discuss, so why not ban chickens!

sooo true
