I still have the maran hen availible.

wonderful! would you be available this weekend if i took a trip down to get her from you? and how much were you asking?

o, and the ducks, i was just curious since i am looking for bantam duckies to eventually add to my flock. though i know raising ducklings this time of year would not be fun in the house!

Very nice!

i have 2 bantam cochins showing that they are very willing to go broody for me right now! so, i did what every chicken nut....er...enthusiast does! i got hatching eggs!

i have some being shipped and should be here for the weekend, and Keesmom may be able to supply me with a couple lf fav eggs too!

My mommas are good mommas, but unfortunately i lost one baby so far---it was outside the nest box, laying in the litter dead when i found it.

I bet it got too cold and couldn't figure out how to get back to it's momma. Winter temps are unforgiving for sure, and it's gonna be survival of the fittest. I will help them as much as i can, but i can't be out there all the time, and I'm letting the mommas do what they know to do.

i had one moma in the house last year in January and she started hatching them on Feb 2nd! i've decided that the last week that my moma hen is out with eggs she will be brought in so i don't loose any of the chicks to the cold or the other greedy moma's who think they are helping them hatch!

Shay, would it be ok with you if i have Keesmom drop off some hatching eggs at your place for me to pick up this weekend too? we've been trying to figure the best way to get together and this was something we thought we'd ask.

I really need to have my moms stay in the chicken tractor, but if i have to i can set up a brooder box in my house for rescues---that is a last resort though. I don't worry about other hens bothering the babies, and even the daddy is a gentle bird and doesn't bother them. I am currently warming up a chilled chick i found this morning, and i am pretty sure i can slip it back under mom soon. My hubby thinks i should have taken all the eggs and NOT allowed the moms to set on them. Oh, well, we'll see how things go since i did let the moms have the eggs. Since there are two moms sharing the nest, they are doing a staggered hatch again (like they did in September) becasue one mom started sitting and the other added eggs for another week before joining her in the same nest. I am considering this all a big adventure in farm life!

I put an 85 watt red spotlight hanging lamp in the coop yesterday and had it on last night. it was funny to look out my window and see the chickens on the roost (I have a window at roost hight) but all the moderns were under where the lamp hangs. It was not super warm when I opened the coop door this morning, but definitely had no chill air. Now my question is, should I shut the light during the day because they are all out scrathcing around, or leave it on???

I would think you could save some electricity by shutting it off during the day and running it only at night---a timer would make it easy by shutting off and turning on for you at set times. A thermostatic control would do it by temperature, which is what i have in my chicken tractor. It is pre-programmed to shut off if the temp reaches 45, and turn on when it drops back to 35, so the temp fluctuates some. Last night was near zero outside according to the weather, but i don't know the exact low at my house...i can say that it was easily the coldest night we've had so far, becasue even with the two heat emitters on, there was ice forming in the water, and my max-min thermometer inside the chicken tractor read a low of 30. I think that's decent, the emitters can keep it more than 20 degrees warmer than outside, but they will shut off if it gets up to 45 in there and save some electricity. I probably don't want to see my next electric bill, lol, but i really don't have room to keep all the Seramas inside my house this winter. I'm thinking about maybe closing off a section of our attached carport, but that will likely cost more than the electricity, plus i really don't have time to take on another building project now, plus it's too cold out to be building! I do have some ideas for next year.......in the spring i plan to set up a greenhouse for plants, and then i thought about using the greenhouse to start more layer chicks, and then grow meaties in future..............oh the possibilties! (My brother and his then-fiancee raised chicks in a greenhouse, twice.)
