Is anyone having problems with their birds having what seems to be a "cold"...sneezing and weezing? No nasal discharge or eye crusting, just really congested in a few hens and mouth breathing. I am so afraid i may have to cull if this is something really bad and that would devastate me because I finally have the breeds I want and had to really work at finding some of them. I have been treating with the Oxcycicline (sp?) and vet rx, giving yogurt and extra breads and greens. They have an appetite, but seem to be having trouble breathing and sound congested in the chest when I hold them up to my ear.

give them some tylan, you can also give them some lemon or lime juice down there through .

Hey i entered the mottled cochin into teh show on jan 15 & 16. her eye looks awsome.

i had one girl that had been sneezing badly so i brought her in last week. she didn't sound congested at all in the chest but i wanted to take precautions since she is my only pullet so far out of certain mating and i really didn't want her getting sick. so this past week she has been pampered in the house and is sounding much better now. good thing she still hasn't started laying yet, i would hate to have to toss her eggs!

Shay, one of the marans laid her first egg for me today!

not as dark as the marans should be but still very dark and very large too!

Those girls are hatchery stock. So they do lay darker than average brown eggs but don't expect the super chocolate brown you'd get from a breeder BCM hen. Glad you're getting eggs from them! I'm not getting many at all from any of mine.

i'm still happy they lay a decent sized dark egg! they will help my cuckoo fav project with that egg size and color too! i was able to hand feed the girls yesterday and they seemed to like it once they realized i was being helpful holding the spinach leaves while they nipped at them! touching them is still a little foreign but they will let me if i have a handful of corn and BOSS to distract them.

ok, this is my first winter haveing geese and ducks, now it is snowing sooooo hard, soooo now in teh moring when i let the geese and ducks out, should i lay down hay for them to walk on?
Poultryrunfarm, how were the geese at your place in teh snow?

Our ducks LOVE the snow! THey went into their house during the night, but they are mostly outside now. Their pen is covered only in wire mesh, so the snow falls through. We did shovel the snow out of their main pen, but before we did, they just plowed paths through with their bodies! LOL They are waterfowl, so they have lots of down-feathers and body fat to keep themselves warm.

How should I give them the tylan? and how much? I dont want to inject into the muscle because that made one of my other bantams really lame afterwards. I have read about putting it diectly into their mouth.

i have both types of Tylan, the injection and the one you can mix with water. if you are using the injection you don't want to keep injecting into the same side/spot each day. do one side and then the other the next day, and back to the other side the next.
