All differnt ones---about 1/3 are EE's, then i have buff orps, golden comets, black astrolorp (sp?), cuckoo marans, welsummers, and salmon favorolles. Lots of pretty various colored eggs in my future!

Cool, I am interested to see how the Welsummers turn out for you.

I picked my favorite breeds (for colored eggs), plus i'm trying a few new ones that are supposed to be the best brown-egg layers. I'm planning to keep them all. I currently have an asst flock of layers, but i lost a bunch this past year, and production is way down. So i decided to get new chicks for a fresh flock of layers, and replace the older flock. I haven't totally decided, but i'm thinking to let the older hens go for cheap or free to people who might want just a few backyard hens that lay 2 or so eggs a week. Our area doesn't have chicken swaps, but i often see people on freecycle looking for hens or rehoming hens, so we'll see how it goes. I'll let my new girls grow up first.

I have 2 welsummers in my older flock, and i totally LOVE them! NICE hens! Good layers, and they have a large size pretty speckled egg.

I have to agree with Vnseed and Darabella on this one the drama is definetly not needed at the swaps. We raise chickens for fun as a hobby we enjoy and all the drama last year made things very unenjoyable.Everyone here loves their chickens and chicks and are careful about where they are going. Most people like variety in their flock and you cant do that with 24 chicks from one person. The "extras" end up getiing eaten, culled or sold off is that better than being raise with the amount origionally wanted?I dont want to be sturring up any hard feelings on this thread but if someone really wants to put chicks in easter baskets they are gonna do it minimum or not.We (humans) have an extra animal issue everywhere you look to many backyard breeders bringing babies into the world that end up being neglected, abused or killed because we dont need that many. I have 26 goats for this reason they had to be born in order to make milk for human consumption but no one wants the babies so they get thrown away like trash.

Very well said! I am tired of people using animals to pay their bills. Weather it be dogs, cats, or other, One thing I know is that any chickens i do not sell to Pet homes, end up staying here as pets, and from what I see on BYC forums, there are more people that have them for pets than for meat although I do not hold that against anyone either provided the animal is culled in a swift humane manner. I hate to say it, but with the economy headed the way it is, we will probably be seeing more people raising animals for food for their families. A sad day it is.

I agree I understand why people do it and why they hunt I just dont understand the idea behind 24 being safer for the chicks when the majority will die anyway .Culling unfortunatly is part of raising chickens personally I have my vet euthanize mine because they are sick or injured beyond repair but other methods are just as acceptable especially if the food is not going to waste.

What drama?
First, I was trying to help someone who is looking for a cat, and I gave her some advice because I work with cat rescues & breeders.
I didn't realize this was going to start a firestorm. As I said before, I was trying to deter the sale of chicks for easter baskets, because I came across that situation last year.
You may not have "seen them on CL", but I did because I was looking to buy hens. This was before I found the swap. Did you think I imagined the whole thing? Sorry I didn't keep a record of my emails to the seller.
I am reacting to a personal experience, and trying to raise awareness about it so it doesn't happen this year (or happens less, at least).
I happen to deal with idiots daily in the [pet] animal world (maybe because I am closer to more urban areas? I don't know).
Forgive me for trying to raise awareness and being worried about horrible practices. I fully understand the state and federal min standards and I am not some crazy animal rights person.

I search the CL ads in several states, even as far away as KY on a daily basis and have been for several years, I have NEVER seen chicks offered for sale and promoted as an Easter commodity, I would like for anyone else on this thread to please post weather they have either. I worked in animal rescue for years with the Mass. SPCA with Offficer Caufield, Yes I go back that far, so I am perfectly aware of the idiots that you speak of, but posting ads on CL or contacting the state is only going to draw NEGATIVE attention and not end in anything positive for the people that work hard at putting the swaps together. As i mentioned in my earlier post, we are very good at judging the prospective buyers of our birds and also deal with a lot of our buyers even before the actual swaps are held, so we know why they are buying the chicks or hens or bunnies for that matter. A lot of the people that sell at these swaps also work in the veterinary field, rescue organizations etc...we are not out to put our animals into bad situations. As for the drama comment, you would need to red back into the archives to see what that comment pertains to,and it all started because myself and a few others started to install regulations as to how animals were handled at the swaps.
