I'll suggest it....Wouldn't an X pen give them enough space to go to the bathroom and move away from it, as opposed to not wanting to go to the bathroom in their crate?

yes but a learning puppy doesn't care if It pee's right next to its space. Peeing on your carpet is bad as opposed to peeing in the area in the play pen. It also keeps them contained when you cant keep a close eye on them.
