Chickentrain's Dog Q&A

Something to keep in mind:
One of my dogs only had the first round of parvo, but still got it later in on. So, it is best to finish the boosters as well before having contact with previously or currently infected dogs. That’s why most vets suggest not to bring your dog out before they are fully vaccinated, because parvo can survive years in the environment as well.
So no walks or playing with other dogs for months?!?!

You can introduce them to vaccinated dogs on your property or if you know theirs is safe or whatever. People bring new puppies into multi dog households all the time. It’s just like no pet stores, walks, dog parks, any of that where you don’t know if the dogs are vaccinated. Brew started interacting with the neighbor’s dog through the fence and also with DB & SIL’s 3 like right away and he’s fine. Just be sure they’ve had their vaccines. Also even if they have, I wouldn’t take him anywhere for the first two weeks anyway so he has time to settle in and bond. And make sure the other dogs are calmer and well behaved and won’t scare him or be too rough. I’m not sure I’d introduce him to other puppies at his age. I think calm adults would be best.

Good on that
dog parks,
good on that
!?!?! No walks for months?!?! But how do you get all of that puppy energy out if they can't go an sniff and walk and learn how to walk on a leash and get properly socialized with things?

'take him anywhere' meaning off the property at all?

What age is good to introduce him to puppies? Because earlier you guys said that we should introduce him to small dogs first
Aren't they used to puppies, considering they grew up in a litter of them?

No, you don't want to risk your puppy getting sick. And it really won't be months. It will be a few weeks. at 8 weeks, and then again at 12 weeks.

When they are old enough to hold their own. When a puppy meets a out of control older puppy, they will no doubt be scared and develop bad relationships with other dogs. Introduce to calm adult dogs, preferably his size.

What do you mean 'and again'? We're getting him at 11 weeks.

Oh, ok. How old is that, usually? Or does it depend on the dog?

It’s pretty easy with a little baby LOL they don’t need much. You actually don’t really want to walk them when they’re real little anyway even if they theoretically had their shots as tiny babies LOL cause it can be bad on their joints to do like structured walks on pavement too much. Better to play with them on the grass or something and let them pick their own pace, etc. and it’s soft. And also you can train them and that’s exhausting to a baby LOL basic obedience/manners/life skills or even tricks and train for meals, etc. as well as slow feeders, puzzle bowls, snuffle mats, other mental stimulation. Exhausting for a baby haha maybe more so than physical exercise. 😂

Tug works amazingly well too btw lol or a flirt pole. Brew is obsessed. 😂

And you can still work on leash manners and socialization quite easily at home. Practice in the house or yard. Which you should actually do first anyway. And also before you can even begin to work on leash manners, they are going to have to get used to even wearing a collar and leash first which may take a while too. And you can invite people over as well as exposing them to different surfaces/flooring and different toys, bowls, sights, sounds, whatever. There’s a ton you can do at home.

And I wouldn’t but you can of course take them to like vet appointments or for car rides or whatever but I wouldn’t invite like tons of people over right away or anything. They need time to adjust.

And well little baby puppies and puppy kindergarten and all that would be fine when he’s big enough or whatever but I was more so meaning older puppies like the 6-18 month old crazy wild type ones that could hurt or scare him haha

Yup! They can easily learn bad manners or be traumatized and reactive for life from bad experiences.

And I think the last shot is usually 16 weeks.

He should have his vaccines at 8 weeks, ask the breeder what he has gotten. They need two rounds, as not all vaccines are age appropriate for puppies. So it sounds like a week after you get him, you can take him to get his vaccines and he is good to go. But do not take him off your property until he is vaccinated. All those other vaccines after the 12 week mark, besides annual rabies, are mostly optional. Ask your vet these questions, too.

With a golden, probably 4-6 months. Just choose calm dogs, or tire ND out before they play. As a puppy he needs to be learning how to be well behaved with other dogs and he's not going to learn that if he's always playing with ill mannered dogs. Socilization isn't about playing with other dogs, its learning manners around them. how to walk past another dog without being reactive, how to be in the presence of another dog and still behave, etc etc.

I guess I'm just incredibly stressed out because the most significant amount of experience that I've had with a puppy is ND and omg she is just so chaotic and has so much energy-

The flirt poles look great but I was worried that they're feathery and move and it would encourage chasing of chickens?

Any adult dogs that are close to his size that we know are crazy. The one that would be good is our friends' ancient french bulldogs and idk how well socialized he is, and he has health issues and an enthusiastic puppy could probably hurt him.

I think that our best bet on a calm dog is our friends' across the street lab, but he's an adult so is larger than a puppy.
