Chickentrain's Dog Q&A

So no walks or playing with other dogs for months?!?!
Probably no walks:(. But as @TheDawg said, play with other puppies should be okay as long as you make sure it’s safe. Socialization at a young age is good for the puppy, but you have to be sure that the dog you are meeting isn’t carrying any virus from the outside to your dog, even if they are vaccinated.

Any adult dogs that are close to his size that we know are crazy. The one that would be good is our friends' ancient french bulldogs and idk how well socialized he is, and he has health issues and an enthusiastic puppy could probably hurt him.

I think that our best bet on a calm dog is our friends' across the street lab, but he's an adult so is larger than a puppy.

Is ND still crazy after a walk? is her yard fenced? can you play fetch with her? Maybe if you burn off some of her energy she will be better behaved with Finn... I'd still wait til he's a litter older though. Maybe 15 weeks?

I've never raised a puppy. I've fostered plenty, but I kept em' til like 12 weeks at the latest, they got adopted SO fast. I never really had to socialize them. I'm mostly just guessing based on videos and books. I have read hundreds of times that socializing isn't just throwing your dog in with other dogs. Its just behaving with others. My long term goal is to have deacon ignore other dogs. Not to play with them. He gets along with a handful of Female dogs, only because they are well behaved, they stay out of each others way, and they don't rough house. You'll be so busy with him anyways, you don't need to go right out to training outside. Do everything inside, then in your front and back yard, and then start working in the street once you've mastered it all step by step. You can also carry him around through busy places to get him used to sights and sounds. As long as he doesn't get in contact with the ground, he will be ok.

Her yard is totally fenced which is GREAT, and I do play fetch with her. However, it can get frustrating because while she's figured out that she has to bring the ball back to me to get it thrown again, she doesn't understand the 'dropping the ball' part. IF you throw another, she takes the first one with her, and if you reach down to pick it up, she jumps at you and nips at your hands. So it can be.....interesting, and difficult to maintain for long enough to properly tire her out. I hung out with her yesterday because neighbor seemed frazzled, and I only saw her calm down some after fetch, a short walk with lots of sniffing, and work with commands.

Can you trade her a ball for a treat? Wave the treat in front of her nose, give her the treat, pick up the ball, and throw it again. If you can really calm her down I don't see why she can't play with Finn after he is vaccinated as long as she's not rough housing too much.

I guess I'm just incredibly stressed out because the most significant amount of experience that I've had with a puppy is ND and omg she is just so chaotic and has so much energy-

The flirt poles look great but I was worried that they're feathery and move and it would encourage chasing of chickens?

Ok!
She’s older too right? They get more energy as they get bigger but babies are easy to tire out lol

And I didn’t realize they even had feathery ones. The one I have is this one. Except they recently changed the lures. I have the old fleece ones which I love. You could also make your own and just tie any toy to a leash or lunge line or whatever lol or even an old towel 😂

I have a leather bite rag too but it was a bit pricey haha but yeah.
