Chickentrain's Dog Q&A

How do you play tug with puppies without causing them to think that play is super lungey and tuggy? Apparently ND was played tug with and would lunge and tug at owner, and then stopped once they stopped playing tug

You have to instill rules to the game and enforce them. I will not play with a crazy dog. If they’re too crazy, I stop playing and stand still and wait for them to walk away or sit or something and stop biting me haha then we can play again. Or if they’re REALLY crazy and won’t stop, then I end the game.

You can also add in some obedience too. So like sometimes I’ll make them sit and/or watch me before I’ll play again. I do that a lot with fetch too. I won’t tolerate leaping up/lunging to get the toy out of my hands. Sit nicely and wait for me to throw it or we don’t play haha if they do manage to get it by doing that, I don’t engage. I make them drop it and sit.

Also I initiate and end all games. That helps with them demanding it too haha but it sounds like they just let her go wild and crazy and didn’t have rules to the game. She didn’t necessarily need to quit playing it altogether, they just needed to add rules. But if they wouldn’t then it’s probably best they quit. But you can instill rules right away when they’re little. Brewster still has a little bit of a hard time sometimes cause he gets so excited and wound up when playing but he’s getting there.
