Chickentrain's Dog Q&A

Is it just me or is the green person full of bs?
Nah tbh I think they’re right about that. I wouldn’t put pressure on him or force him especially if he’s fighting it. Instead just lure him back into the position without saying anything and reward that. Don’t say it again cause you already told him what to do, just lure him back. Then reward and make sure to release him before he can decide to break it on his own. Then slowly increase the duration. He’s a baby. He doesn’t get it yet. But just put him back. Don’t hold him down.

Okay I read it and I actually agree with most of what they said. I don’t think luring is bad though and that was kinda B.S. BUT that said lately I’ve been trying to like wait for Brew or DBs dogs to think things through on their own and they do eventually get it. I do like having a thinking dog. So I don’t necessarily lure or cue every behavior anymore or whatever. A lot of times I just wait. And it works great and it’s awesome watching that lightbulb click on in their heads when they finally get it hahah but that doesn’t mean I think luring is bad or that I don’t use it or whatever. I do still. I just also like letting them think things through hahah

I've only been putting a hand on his back once he's already down, to try to encourage him to stay down

I'm doing that with him some, but not with cued behaviors, just things like 'sit before we open the door' and if he breaks his sit before I walk out, I close it again
he figures that stuff out on his own

I would just toss some treats on the floor to encourage him to stay down rather than forcing it. I know you’re probably doing it gently rather than “forcing” but still. You want him to want to do it not be made to.
