So we met Chickie Mamma and her DH today (NICE FOLKS). She
gave us 3 silkies and a Phoenix. She asked me if we were
interested in her packing peanuts that arrived this morning from Ideal.

Who am I to turn down chicks. I figured 5 or 6 Leghorns would be in
the box. Nope, there were 15 Australorp chicks and 3 Cochins of
some sort.

They will be raised with love and used as fryers unless homes are found.
One of the Cochins enjoyed sleeping in my wife's hair.

i have a very dumb question maybe some one can help and this looks like the post to ask. What is a packing peanut and why?

That second picture is so cute. The chick is looking up at the camera, looks like he is saying "Did he just say fryers????" haha that gave me a chuckle. They sure are cute.

A packing peanut is what they call the extra chicks (usually roos) that the hatchery includes in your order for warmth.

Cute chicks PC!

A packing peanut is a male chick the hatcheries use for extra warmth
when shipping chicks, especially this time of the year.

It's sad but there is a much higher demand for hens than roos. Most
standard roo chicks are used as packing peanuts, snake food, fertilizer,
and even thrown into dumpsters alive to die. They have very little or
no value.

We have ordered them a few times to use as fryers. Unlike a Cornish
which get's to big to fry these roos will provide 3 pounds of meat at
12 weeks.

We will raise them with love and care and they will provide my family
with fresh meat. It's better than a slow death for them and it's better
for us not to support factory farming.

They look so happy! I know they went to a good home. They are sooo big compared to the little bantams that were in the box. Have fun with them, some of the australorps (sp) had beautiful markings on their faces, almost...couldn't...resist...

Thanks for making it so easy for me to rehome the silkies and the peanuts!

My pleasure. Thanks. My wife fell in love with those two white silkies.
The black roo is establishing his place in the flock. Him and my Red Silkie
roo will need to get used to each other. The Phoenix is roosting high
to stay out of the action. She is SO SWEET and has already become a
favorite. I'll get pics tommorow.

Oh, not one crow yet.
