I've only had chickens for 6 weeks but I love them so much. I really think they cured my depression. I wasn't severely depressed, just in a funk. And I'm sure part of it was from the long winter and what not, but ever since my husband opened up to the idea of me getting chickens I spent a couple months researching everything. Once I felt I knew enough to take care of them we got 6 baby chicks from TSC from the red pullet bin. They have become my hobby. My son and I go out everyday and let a couple at a time roam the yard supervised (the run isn't complete yet.) Today my Chickadee hopped up in my lap like a little puppy and just sat there soaking up the sun. And then the other one, Lacey hopped up there with her, and she used to be afraid of me. I have found that having chickens really makes you appreciate the little things in life, simple things. I just feel so much happier now. Just thought I would share that and see if anyone has a similar experience.

That is wonderful. I find that being with animals is a great way to "be in the moment" and really helps me appreciate the little things as you say. Its great to share the with other people like you son, too.

Yes, there is something peaceful about being around animals. They don't judge, you don't need to try to impress them. Makes me sound antisocial...lol.

I really didn't have anything to be depressed about, I'm very blessed. I have no idea what was causing me to feel that way, but I have been noticeably happier lately. I really think the chickens have filled some kind of void, as silly as that makes me sound. Silly or not, I'll take it :)

Depression isn't about "having something to be depressed about". It's a chemical imbalance in the brain, a true medical condition. Anyway, I am glad you are feeling better now. Chickens are really relaxing and comforting. Most of the time anyway.
