chicks afraide of a pen!?

I held a black pen tip up to my couple day olds and they all backed up to the back of the tank like they where very scared (they usually run up to the glass). why would they be scared of a pen?

They are scared of anything foreign and anything that comes from above. Chickens are eaten by most everything, so they are very cautious.

Put a couple of mill worms in there or crickets. Then they will not run away!! Chicken keep away!! very funny

i had it come from the side of the brooder to see their reaction. Today i tried the same thing and they tried to eat it this time, i was surprised they didn't try to eat it the first time.
