chicks and children

If you are a REAL neat freak, chickens may not be for you. However, they can help you reform a little---

It is easier to ignore the little stuff when the chickens are sooo cute.

My kids gather the eggs---it is almost impossible to stop them. Just remember poop washes, clothes are easy to change, and dirt don't hurt.

Unless you eat it. You probably don't want your small frys eating poop.

I see nothing wrong with letting kids do the egg collecting. Shells on fresh eggs are very hard so it will be harder for them to break.
As far as the breeds I have, nothing produces eggs like the Black Australorps! They seriously pop out some eggs.
However, I have a very soft spot for Cochins, they are just so cute. And well, the Golden Comets have two tons of personality. As far as a ranking goes: Australorps, followed by Golden Comets which are a fairly close second, then Cochins. Cochins will go broody a lot so that will cut down on some of your eggs from them.

Kids and chickens should be fine. Just remember good hand washing. My kids ages 4, 6, and 11 just love to help take care of our chickens. It reall can be a family project for all to participate and enjoy.
