Im trying to figure out where to keep my chicks the first weeks of life. My basement is very wet and damp. Could that bother them while in their chick pen? Otherwise its my living room with questionable safty from my youngest

Yes it could bother them. Theres a risk of mold, which can cause sicknesses.

what's wrong with upstairs? Small numbers of chicks will not smell, or make BIG messes for the first couple weeks.

Keep them somwhere dry, clean and warm.

That is what I thought about a few chicks too. The only thing that bothered me was the smell of the pine shavings. I got sick of it after the first 2 days. I evicted them and they ended up in the garage again. I was only planning on them staying in there for a few days anyways. We were going to have some unwelcome family (ghetto) visitors over and didnt exactly know when it was they were coming and everytime they come over they hover over the brooder and freakout the babies. Did I mention their kids are little demons that break toys and leave damage wherever they go and are not "gentle" with the birds. Oh wow totally got off subject. LOL.

Anyways thepine shavings is what I couldnt stand.

I never notice the pine shavings. I always smell their food. Everytime I brood chicks, when their food is heated, it smells just like CHEESE!!!! I have no idea why?!
