Chicks and dust bathing

I bought a bag of sand for them to bath in. One tried it one time and she scared the crap out of all the others with the dust storm. Mine prefer just plain dirt over sand. When they were little I did a count one day and had one AWOL. Then I noticed a head sticking up out of the pine shavings. Silly chick had completely buried herself.

No, but the sand has small pebbles that the chicks use as grit.

I did notice one of my chicks laying over on its side the other day, i was slightly concerned. I didnt know what it was doing, maybe this was it.
