Chicks are here!!!

It's the shelf liner I had left over from WalMart, with a dog pee pad underneath. I wanted to make my life a little easier later on when I have to clean the crate. It took them maybe an hour to poop all over it, so I now have paper towels lining the floor.

I too got a call this morning right before 7. I too ordered from MPC... am in love with my new babies.... put a teddy bear in the brooder box .... am amazed at their every move!!!! This is our second batch... we have 8 that just started laying in January. Ordered 2 Buff's and 3 EE's this time. They're beautiful but we have a BULLY. One of the EE's picks at everyone else's eyes constantly. We 're trying to alleviate stress not cause more but we finally separated the bully with a screen divider in the brooder box. She can see and hear the others but can't pick at them. Anyone have any advice. I don't want to create a bigger problem. The first go round was nothing like this. Sibbling rivalry is starting way too early here!!!!! Thanks to anyone who might share my problem and have already found a solution.

I have a RIR chick that is picking feathers off of everyone and poking them in the eyes! The BO that was pecking everyone has stopped for now... we'll see though. Anyone's input on the whole "sibling rivalry" thing would be much appreciated!

I think that you need more space for the # of chicks you have. If they are stressed you will get picking and pecking problems etc. They may be too hot and not have enough room to get away from the light. I have a huge space for 20-30 chicks, may need two heat lamps if not warm enough but 90 at this age is fine. I would recommend putting paper towels over your shelf liner. You can change it out or put clean paper over top at least twice a day - then roll it up, pitch and replace. At day 3 you can put pine shavings in...nothing too fine. At that point I raise the water and feed a bit off the ground so it does not get covered in chicks playing in the shavings! Good Luck!
