Chicks arrived - It's cold - Silkie to the rescue

I love silkies! They are the best mommas (ours is only 10 weeks old and she takes in all babies that come in). Biddie must be so excited to have so many little babies.

I was surprised to see something added to this. What's new...

The babies are starting to lay eggs.

Biddie hid behind a fedbin, layed an egg and hatched it the first part of this month. Nights have been down to 20F and all is well. We put her out in one of the vacant coops alone with her little silkie chick so no one would bother them. So far, all seems well.

Yesterday it was in the 40s when I went out to check on everyone. I could hear the baby loudly peeping for his mom to stop scratching around and come get me warm!

I closed the door to help them be a bit warmer.

Such a sweet story. Glad to hear that Biddie has a baby of her very own now! Whatever became of the eggs that Biddie was sitting on when the cold babies arrived? Did they hatch?

If I remember right, she had taken over Alicia's nest. Alicia is a fleur D'uccle who thought she wanted to hatch some eggs but kept losing interest and something else kept getting her eggs (I saw the biggest rat out there about that time). We took the surviving eggs to Biddie but doubted they were any good - Alicia would brood but would also go for long walks - I think she was afraid of what was getting her eggs. I knew we were going to be getting baby chicks and Biddie might be needed so we kept her on the eggs - just in case. After we moved her to the chicks that morning, we checked the eggs to see if we needed to set up the incubator but they were clear.
