Any ideas for fun chicky things to do?

So busy with the little ones! Haha I have only had them 2 days and I can tell they are looking for something to do. I threw a Dandelion in their pen to give them something to peck at but they want nothing to do with it. I crushed up some dried mealworms but that only lasts 2 seconds. They found out I have been hiding shavings under the paper towels so they are trying to dig up the shavings (and eat them). Fun stuff!

McMurray gave me my refund for the 2 Red Leghorns no questions asked. I appreciated it, it was sad loosing them but at least we have the other 2 and that's all that I was planning on keeping anyway. I have to do something about lighting in there I cannot get good pictures!

Mine are so scared of me. They all JUMP when I move lol I have done nothing but stare at them from a corner. I guess that comes across as creepy... lol

I need to find some grass now. lol how did you find a dandelion in this weather? lol I'm not even sure I can find some grass =D

My brooder has hardware cloth for the floor so their poop could fall through, but I've put doggie pads on it for now. Do you think I can take the pads off now and let them be on the hardware cloth? the pads are getting pretty poopy! little poopers

The awesome lady at Fresh Eggs Daily (blog) has an article called Brooder Boredom Busters with lots of good ideas, MY CHICKS ARRIVE TOMORROW AND I CAN'T STAND IT. Whew! Had to get that out of my system.

I've been following a thread on here called Handling Chicks that has had some interesting info about how to approach a brooder so you don't look like a big scary predator.

Kadu, my dandelions seem to be thriving in the middle of a wet Northern winter, I think they may be genetically engineered to drive me crazy. You are welcome to visit and pick as many as you like!

I live on 5 acres in the PNW and I went for a walk through my over grown veggie garden and found one Lots of greenery around my place. I have bribed about half of my chicks so far with meal worms. some are still afraid of me but I have a certain call I do like "here chicky chicky" and lightly tap on the brooder and spread out the crushed worms. I have been leaving my hand in there and just touch the chicks. I only pick them up if I see a little poo on their bum. I just want them to associate a good thing with my moving hand first before I shower them with cuddles. More and more are coming over to my hand to see what the excitement is all about.

Hmmm... So far I've found yogurt and meal worms to bribe with, so I'm gonna start with yogurt first. =D and I will keep my hand in there but not pick them up...

you both have convinced me to take a walk tomorrow and find some dandelions lol

They are here! All six were alive and toasty, they were double boxed and had a heat pack. I dipped all their beaks and put lukewarm electrolyte water near-ish the heat lamp but no one really seems interested in drinking. All but one are pecking around and eating the food I've scattered. The Gold Comet isn't looking particularly lively though. Everyone has clean butts! I can't believe they are finally here.

oooh that's exciting! I'm glad they arrived safely. The electrolytes should help with the golden comet =D
