Good Morning. I'm new to BYC and couldn't seem to locate another thread about newly hatched chick down. I'm sorry if this is not the right thread for this question. If it isn't, could you please direct me to the correct place?

I have some newly hatched chicks and about 5 of them (they are all solid black in color) were born with very little chick down and bald spots. They look like someone gave theirs fluff a crew cut. The chicks are eating, drinking, and otherwise acting like the rest of the chicks but they almost look like they have mange. Does anyone know what this could be?

Thanks for your help.

Without a picture it's very hard to give advice. What breed are the chicks?

I will take some pictures when I get home. The chicks are mixed breed. The rooster was a blue Orpington and the hen could have been:
Red Star
EE
Speckled Sussex
Golden or silver laced wyandotte
Barred Rock
Partridge Rock
Golden sexlink

and probably a few more that I am forgetting. All of the short downed chicks are solid black. They look almost as if their feathers were singed but I know that isn't a possibility because I saw them hatch.
