Ive been trying for over 1 week with every variety treat that you all talk about. They are 4 weeks old, almost five. They come running, but then just look at it. But look out if I bring on the meal worms! it seems they dont want anything else but the worms. Ya think they will come around soon and try new treats some day? ive tried, strawberries, scrambled eggs, egg shells, tiny pieces of chicken, lettuce, cheerios, oatmeal. etc etc etc.. they wont eat it

What I've noticed with my chicks is they are copy cats, lol. If one turns its nose up they all will, if one decides to try something they are going to chase that one and try to take it just because it has something the rest of them don't. Mine wouldn't touch the treats I was trying to give them at first either when I put it down for all of them at the same time. So what I did was took them one by one until I got a taker. Once I had a taker I put him/her back among the rest of them and gave them another piece of whatever it was I was feeding them, that one grabbed it up and ran, so the rest persued a chase, and that was that they gobbled down the rest of the plate, lol.

How long do you leave the treats for them? Mine are 2-months old and hesitant to try anything new, but if I leave it with them for awhile, they'll try it and and either eat it all up or decide that they hate it.

Mine are picky about most green veggies...they turn their beaks up at them.

I've also realized that if I make a mixture of goodies (things like cut up grapes, watermelon, oats, strawberries, corn, green veggies, small bits of tuna or salmon, etc..whatever is around) and then mix it all up with a bit of plain yogurt, they "lick" the plate clean. I think it's like putting cheese over your veggies to hide them like people do for their kids! heehee

Also..mine were more finicky at 4-weeks than 8-weeks...so maybe yours will try more things as they get older...

LOL!!! Well, you have done it now! After meal worms there is nothing else (in the chicken world it seems)...at least they love you (or the meal worms). I've noticed mine have developed tastes for treats almost as enthusiasticly as meal worms, but not quite. Live bugs from the garden encite a near 'meal worm stampede'....their 'tastes' may change as they get older. Mine have developed a more sophisticated taste. I would cut WAY back on the worms and just continue to offer other things that are bite size and easy for them to eat and give the worms only on special days. (spoiled brats aren't they! But they are soooooo easy to spoil!) ...I'm still laughing, they are such con artists!

Mine, who are 2 weeks old, also did not want anything but the mealworms. I took cut up watermelon in large dish and put it down, curiosity got the better of one of them and then a stampede. BGinVA said it, they are major copycats!

Mine can be picky chicky's :) Things they do like, DRIED mealworms, they aren't interested in live worms at all:( BUGS, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, watermelon, corn on the cob, cucumbers, blueberries, rice, and something they have always loved and I still give it to them daily, is a bowl of their crumbles made into a mash..

They like pecking my fingers and toes to:)

They are copy cats for sure. They also have different tastes. Mine will not touch dried mealworms unless I soak them in water to rehydrate them but still isn't a big hit. Raw oatmeal is one of their favs that I will feed them out of my hand. Raisans are their fav that I have found. No way I'm giving them out of my hand though.

Where can I get mealworms from?

They are sort of expensive-- I get a big jug of them from Tractor Supply for like $12.99 (which I think is expensive for worms!)... Will getting around to looking for earthworms from the yard one of the days but with current temps of 100s and my red clay soil as hard as a rock that will be in the distant future.... My favorite is a cold ear of corn from the fridge, just shuck it and throw ... they love it....
