Chicks Dropping Like Flies

I have had many chicks eat their bedding and none showed any harm. It very well may be that this chick had a twisted intestine. That would account for the heaving after eating or drinking, because nothing was passing thru.
You did nothing wrong. Not every chick makes it to hatching, not every hatchling is perfect. Like all other animals and humans as well, there can be problems that you cannot see. You did the best you could have done.
You take a chance every time you get some fluffy butts. But, most of the time, you will have a great group of birds and with proper care they will reward you with eggs and countless hours of fun watching them.
I am sorry you had this happen.

I feel bad. It's possible if this was due to some type of yeast infection and sugar water is the last thing I should have suggested. Keep this in mind if you have any other birds coming up with these symptoms. Ironically (and I've heard this before) inactive brewer's yeast is one good source of Thiamine. Also, I've read where stargazing is a sign generally of some other problem. Nutrition is only one but seems to be the most common (or at least the most treatable).

Don't give up on chicken farming. You're always going to have problems (and heartbreaks) raising chickens and all you can do is learn from every experience.
