Ok all need help.

Am baffled by this.

3yrs of chickens; chick raising.

Hatched a batch of Bresse with a few Silverrudds & Cream Legbars.

Oct. 31 was first Bresse hatch with 3 CL.

Nov. 9 second batch with more of above & SR.

On Nov. 15 we went in one afternoon & found one Bresse of the older group dead. So it was 2wks old. We were shocked because they seemed fine.

We moved them all out to our tractor with a heat lamp. Like the group that just vacated.

We had a temp drop drastically. (Maybe contributing factor 1.)

We lost on the 21st we lost another. On the 22nd we lost 4 in one night. (Maybe contributing factor 2: found they’d been without water for maybe 12hrs. The tender that night didn’t check properly. And then the feed was full of poop because roosting.)

We moved them back inside in a tote w more heat until we got the garage brooder setup that day.

We lost 2 more on the 23 & 24th. Ones we thought were weak already.

At this point all but one have been Bresse, except the on CL.

(One loss I am not considering as much is a Sr that was born with splayed leg; it picked up but then passed 5 days later.)

The only other was a SR that died yesterday. I also bought 4 RIR & to this point they’ve been fine & not any issues.

There is NO sign of any disease or virus.

No bloody stools, no diarrhea, no breathing issues, no mites/lice.

The older 6-8wk olds they were with are fine. The bought 4-5wk old group is fine. My older group is fine.

Tonight I go out to them fussing again in the garage, it seems they’re super cold, even with a lamp on. We wrapped the brooder with plastic to contain the heat more, it’s 70 in it. We also put a “top” on it to keep more heat in that way. I also noticed that 2-3 of the RIR are also looking droopy now.

The oddity is, when we move the feeder they all run to it like they’re starving.

The waterer is there too.

I go wash a smaller waterer & add some honey & stuff to just boost them up.

Once they realize it’s water they come over to drink. Even though the other waterer is there.

I forced a few of the weaker ones to drink; once they realized it was water they would drink some. I had one drink like they were dehydrated.

What is causing this?

I am familiar with the signs of illness to look for. I’ve even refreshed my knowledge on Marek’s & cocci with this. I know of MG.

Is this a heat issue? A disease? Or a genetic considering it seems to be this one specific breed??

Help please!!

Quite stressed out with this.

I suspect coccidiosis. Did you try Corid on them yet?

The only diseases I know of they can have upon hatch is if the parents have MG, then the eggs could too. Marek's they could only have if the hen that layed the egg had Marek's and her dander was on the shell of the egg. Otherwise, it would take contact with the disease, either direct or indirect.

Can you please post photos of the brooder setup, the chicks and their poop?

Huddling, being trampled because they are cold would be something I'd consider.

Dehydration and not eating would be another thing I'd consider as a contributing factor of the losses too.

Give them a good warm spot that is about 80-85F, let the remaining area of the brooder be the 70F.

Watch to see that each chick is eating and drinking, if they aren't, then re-introduce them to food/water.

Coccidiosis is a possibility at 1 1/2-2wks of age so treating with Corid won't do any harm.

MG = Mycoplasma is a respiratory disease, you would note respiratory symptoms, which are not mentioned, chicks would have mucous, coughing, sneezing, bubbles in the eyes, etc.

Marek's disease = symptoms would not show up until at least 8-12weeks of age at the earliest.
