well im not putting her down but my dad wont take her to the vet b/c he dosent really like bringing "livestock" to the vet but they are my pets lso idk. i dont want to slice it off... ewww.. she is sleeping in my room tonight...

I would definately get some antibiotic cream for her eye....and maybe..you can make one of those collars....like for dogs....to keep her from scratching it. Either way...you might want to keep her seperated from the others, untill she heals.

I dont know that much about fowl pox, but Trey, wasnt your other birds comb having some issues?

Dhlunicorn is a fount of information on different bird issues, she helped me out lots with my lil crossbeak.
Could your gals have fowl pox? I think someone on this board is actually currently treating one of their birds or several of them that have it (its Cheri, her rooster is named Foggy, not sure how to post the link, but she is putting iodine on the roosters comb sores, dont think you can put it near the eye tho) , and they are doing ok, cuz they caught it early. Not sure the treatment tho. I would NOT try to cut on anything, if its just a stye or infection or pox, that wont help and will make it worse.

How is that other birds comb by the way? Reason I wondered pox is cuz your other gal was having that problem and its contagious.

Any better? You poor guy, your first birds and having so many probs.

ya jill i saw that fowl pox thing on the byc websight and i think it is that on my older hen but idk about the baby.. i hope it isent.. maybe i should put them in a small cage so the other one dosent get it. b/c the baby is always around the black hen but the red one pecks at it all the time so i think that it maybe the same thing... ill see... im taking it to the feedstore on monday. ill try the "monkey blood" lol.

What I meant was that if your one older hen has it, since its contagious and they are probably together right?, that she might have caught it too, IF its the pox. On the other hand, I have no idea how to tell if they are just pecking each others combs. What a problem!

I would definitely make sure they all stay dry (I think damp, muddy conditions make it worse, sometimes carried by mosquitoes too), and be puttin iodine on the one hens comb for sure.

Make sure they are staying hydrated (like give them watermelon rinds with quite a bit of watermelon left in it, any kind of fruit with lots of water), that kind of thing, keep them very clean, etc, to keep up their immune systems so they can fight this off, even if its not fowl or chicken pox, they need their strength so they can fight whatever it is off. The way I hear it, it runs its course, but healthy birds have a much better chance of shaking it.

Zoolander is the one with the eye prob? Hope it gets better, like the other poster said, they may have to put one of those cone thingies around her head (like you see the dogs sometimes wear) to keep her from scratching and hurting herself. If not...you may have to make one yourself. good thing your inventive....

There is no cure for fowl pox. it will go away on its on. Iodine will help with the blisters, but not the actual virus, antibiotics will help secondary infections..once they get pox they are immune to it..I'd suggest vaccinating, it's cheap and easy, it wont help the ones that already have it but it will keep the others in the flock from getting it

trey i have a book on chickens fowl pox it says the signs are coughing , sneezing, gasping, nasal discharge, respiratory distress, depression, marked drop in egg production.

that does not mention eye problems. i worked for a opthamologist as a tech for six years. i think it is like the post earlier, probably like a stye or a chalazion. if you can get some type of antibiotic that can be used around the eye and on people they say warm compresses but i know that will be hard on a chicken.

or could have another chicken pecked at its eye?

but your best bet i think is antibiotics and i would get my hands on a ointment form that will be easier for you to apply like with a q-tip!
