Took the chicks outside for the first time today. Put them in an x-pen with a tarp over it (for shade and hawk protection) near the coop while I sealed and painted it. They seemed to have a great time! At first they all stayed in a tight bunch then started branching out exploring. It was so funny to see one of them find a leafe and start squawking with excitement which brought the others running to see and try to take it away! They are just shy of 6 weeks old so they will be going to the coop full time as soon as we have their pen complete. Thought the field trip would be a good way to start the transition.
By the way, these are all supposed to be pullets, but I’ve noticed Alice’s comb is a bit larger and more colorful than her RIR sister, Carol. She’s the close up pic. Any thoughts on whether she’s truly a girl?
Thanks all! I’m so glad I found this site! It’s wonderful to connect with chicken people. My friends think I’m a little crazy...
