Chicks First Night Outside

Quote:
I think I am getting on their nerves. Every time I go to check on them, they look at me like, "What?!? We're trying to sleep here!"

The Raviolis have turned out well. Two roos and six pullets. The dark chick that I thought was a roo has turned out to be a pullet...but the name had already stuck, so I will have a hen named Charles

Now they just have to get me through tonight and they will have me raised:)

My coonhound has it worse than I do...she "helped" raise them and she is quite attached. For the past two weeks I've taken the chicks out during the day and back in at night. She was upset with me when I didn't bring them inside tonight. She won't leave the gate...she just lays out there, staring at the coop, whining...bless her.

Now that's funny.

Glad to hear things are working out. Post some new pics when you get a chance.

Call her Charlie and folks will think you're "with it".

Poor dog, maybe it needs a valium too. You should both go sleep outside.

We survived the first night out! Some of us took it better than others...I, personally, need a nap! Haylee (coonhound) is still frustrated because her chicks are not in their brooder. When I would take them out during day & bring them inside in evenings, Haylee would stand over brooder and look each chick over individually, like she was counting them & checking for injuries. Made me think she didn't trust me not to lose one or two.

Hopefully tonight will be easier.

Thanks for the emotional support everyone!

BantyRooster - I will get some pics up this weekend...to prove to the world & Haylee that I left no chick behind

Glad all was well with the little ones last night-I will be dealing with this in a week or so and am not looking forward to being up all night!

Good luck on your outdoor excursion!! Hopefully you can get more sleep than I did, but don't bet on it

My chicks were counted and recounted more times last night than they have been their entire life. Occasionally one would be behind another and I couldn't see it, so I was crawling around the coop at all hours last night. The neighbors have yet another reason to think I am nuts now

My chicks were outside from day one. DH just built me a step under the window of the shed so I could peek in on them, about twenty times a night at first.

I am so glad you made this post. I am going to be in your shoes in a week or so. I say- 'or so'- cuz the closer it gets the harder it is to think about them out there all by themselves. Right now they go in and out- just like you did with yours. I know its getting closer to 'the time', cuz they are getting harder and harder to catch!!

That is exactly the way mine were! I took them out in a pet carrier and in the beginning, around their usual "bedtime" they would go back into the carrier and all I had to do was shut the door & carry them inside...as time went by they started avoiding going back into the carrier so that it was more & more drama to get them gathered up. Although they were originally puzzled the first night I left them in the coop, the puzzlement soon turned to an all out chick celebration

Good luck with your transfer. Keep us posted!
