Chicks from Tractor Supply

I got 4 silkies and a polish at my TSC. They had no idea what they are. Some customers that were there said that most of the chicks in the bantie bin couldn't be banties, and when I asked why they thought that, they said it was because banties always had feathered feet. Those must be the same people that apply to work there. Our TSC is done with chick days however, which is really too bad because I would like to look for some polish.

On my most recent trip to the Banty Bin, I got a Black Silkie, Golden Sebright, Silver Sebright, Black Tailed White Jap, Cochin (a guess from pics on here) and 3 old english games. I'm sure the workers don't know what they are some places (and some probably don't care). When they come to the our TSC, it's just a box that says assorted bantys and is from McMurray's.

I have a question about the bins at TSC, when it says assorted bantam does that mean they are hens and roosters mixed or all assorted bantam hens? I got 6 from the bins and all are silkies but I have no idea if they are roos or hens thanks

i got a few birds from TS as well and i have 3 that are still in the house they are taking longer to get Thier feathers in and they are starting to get feathers on Thier feet . they are like a gray in color with some black stripes if you want to call them that. And what i thought to be RIR 's but they have some red on them but with some white feathers as well. And i also got a black one and one that is all silver colored. No clue what I have just know that they are bantams.

any idea what they might be? I could get some pics and post.

Most places do not sex bantams. Assorted means different breeds and straight run means they are not sexed.

I thought that I was getting some silkies at our TSC. I grabbed all of the white bantams out of their bin last week. I think that 2 are white cochins, 3 are probably old english gamebirds. I also got one that is for sure an Old English - BB red, & two more brahmas- buff -was hoping that they were something else. I like brahmas - they are a nice bird - but was hoping for something else.

Last month we bought 8 assorted bantams - we have 2 silver sebrights, 2 gold sebrights, 2 light brahmas, and 2 buff brahmas.

TSC people could not tell me what breeds were possible. Their flyer/brochure showed mille de fleur d'uccles and I think brahmas.

Definitely a grab bag of chicks. It looks like we have one rooster for sure. That one was fighting with one of the sebrights.

I believe that are chick days are until May 9. I will check again early next week - Chickenboy still wants a couple of silkies.

TSC workers are clueless. I have a great story. The other day I called TSC to see if they had any chicks or ducklings. The girl who answered told me they were to get chicks that afternoon, but they did have ducks. So I asked what kind of ducks. She asked me to hold while she checked. When she came back she said "Rhode Island Reds". I said "Well they aren't ducks then." She was like "oh yes, they are ducks. " Me, "Well they aren't Rhode Island Reds then". She says "wait, I'll go check again, Oh they are mallards"

I have to jump in and come to the defense of some TSC workers. When I picked up the girls I met a kid named Jake. Everyone in the store directed me to him as being the chicken expert. Apparently Jake (all of maybe 17 years of age) keeps 300 or so chickens on hand at all times. He is an actual farmer. He also raises goats and was an excellent source of knowledge. I also know where to go to get a goat should I ever decide to pick up a couple.

So if you'r ein a TSC, find out who actually raises livestock and you should get good advice and answers.

YMMV
