This is my first time and I only have room for 5-10 chickens. I wanted to get them at the local feed store, but am worried that I won't get the breed I want. Since people who work there are clueless, what is the best way for me to know what I'm getting? I have looked at ordering online to be sure that I can get what I want, but it looks like it is going to be so much more expensive. I'd rather save the money and get them locally. I am really wanting Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rock, Americaunas, and a Buff Leghorn or two. Are their pullets all good layers? How do I know what I'm getting?? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

How do I know which ones are which when I go to TSC? Will someone be able to tell me. From my experience none of them know what they are doing when it comes to chicks!

The only way you can be sure is to be there when the box is opened. We knew the shipment due date at our store and just lucked out when the boxes arrived. We picked them out of the labeled vendor boxes and got the exact ones we wanted.

Otherwise you are gambling against the store clerks knowledge (shouldn't you have water in there with that starter feed....) and the kids that will pick one up and put it back in the pullet box.

Your best best is to find out when the shipment is due and then hang out or to get someone at the store to call you when the employee is heading to the post office.
