I would have cleaned it too. The bacteria grows and circulation inside of the machine is not a good thing. Plus in nature birds will leave the nest occasionally and it is not effecting the hatch. Last time I did it I used a deep cookie sheet lined with a warm cotton towel (fresh out of the dryer). Laid the eggs onto it and covered them with the remaining towel. Washed up the mess, filled it with warm water, but the eggs bag into it and turned on the machine. Did not take long and the hatch turned out fine.
