Chicks have poopy butt

Can anyone tell me what causes feces to build up on a chicks butt? I've had a couple die, used warm water and mineral oil on my third chick and waiting to see if she makes it. Just looking for info and if there is preventive maintenance for it

I always give any chicks with pasty butt, a daily feed of scrambled egg and a little ACV in their water.....works a treat regardless of cause HOWEVER make sure that the temperature in your brooder is optimum.....they should be comfortably moving around the brooder, not huddled under the lamp all the time or huddled away from it either.
