Chickens can handle cold far better than they can hot, so definitely go for heat tolerant birds and don't worry about the cold at all. Chickens start panting as low as 85 degrees and I start putting out pans of water for them at that temperature.

If you live somewhere hot I would not recommend Orpingtons. They are just to big and fluffy. I have a couple and keeping them cool in the summer is a struggle compared to other breeds. I will never add them to my flock again because I just feel so bad for them in the summer.ok the breeds I plan to get are Rhode Island red, barred rock, and buff orpington. is that okay cause the local feed store carries other breeds too.
