A goofy hen had a hidden nest, I candled a few days after we found the nest and 17 out of 20 eggs looked like they were a few days from hatch  Almost 2 weeks ago her eggs hatched. When she got up, there were 16 babies! She lost one the first night but the rest are doing great! I put a cage over her for the first week days so I could put chick starter in and not have the rest of the chickens eat it all. The I opened the cage and let them out. Night time temps are around 32 F, day time temps are between 50 and 65 but they still run around pecking and being happy little chicks. Today I saw something that I have never seen before. I rolled a few apples to momma hen because she seemed interested in the apples some other chickens were eating. Momma hen called her babies, then started pecking out pieces of apple and dropping them on the ground for her chicks. They snatched up the pieces and ran with them. It was just so cute!!! Here's hoping they can be ready for a North Dakota winter!

Cute!! Good luck with them!

I like fall chicks because they are ready to lay eggs early spring bc they will be 5 months old right around early March!
It's going to be barely above freezing for a high this weekend, they'll be around 3 weeks old. Though it does seem that chicks exposed to cold temps feather out faster than chicks in a brooder.
