What is too cold at night in the garage in a large cardboard box.
I have 10 (4 -3 week gold sex link and 6-1 week BR)chicks that are currently in my basement and I are startinng to make a bit more of a mess and I want to move them out to the garage.
I will have heat lamps but just wanted to check if this can be done. I think they will be fine as it isn't getting below 40 at night and it is an attached garage in Pittsburgh, PA. I just want some reassurance here on BYC.

Thanks

I have my 2-day old chicks in my unheated attached garage right now and I live in Massachusetts. The temp under the heat lamp is 95 degrees and they seem happy.

I figured I would be fine but as a relative newbie, I am always questioning my thinking(with the chicks and everything

You are controlling their temperature with the heat lamp. If you feel your garage is drafty, use a cardboard or tub brooder instead of an open cage type brooder. They should be plenty warm as long as you are accurately controlling the heat with the heat lamp. Those little fuzzies do make a lot of dust!

I'm in MA- i have 24 in a large cardboard box in my garage right now. There is a heatlamp, and the temp stays between 90-95.

I've started 4 batches of chicks in the unheated garage for up to 4 weeks (got anxious and too optimisic about spring coming). No worries there, had them toastey and thriving even with a foot of snow on the ground outside.

Only concern I would have is Heat Lamp + Cardboard = BBQ'd chix, if you're not careful. I've seen a heat lamp melt the top of the plastic waterer (the kids were a little too helpful that day).

ours are now 4 weeks old (today

) and last week we moved them outside to their coop. I put 2 heat lamps out there with them, and it's comfy for me to go out there in a t-shirt most times... as long as it's not drafty, they should be fine. anyways after a week, they should have the idea down about where there is warmth and food and water etc...

I have my chicks out in my detached, unheated garage. It's gotten below freezing here since I've had them. I have a heat lamp on them and they're in a very large cardboard box. They're doing great! 3 are about 5-6 weeks old, and 10 are 2 weeks old.

robk0220 your chicks have the same birthday as mine! They are also 4 weeks today. I've had them in an attached unheated garage since I've brought them home and have never had a thermometer to check the temps under the heat lamp. I just watch them and how they're acting to see how I need to adjust the lamp. I also have a week old that I've had out there since she was 2 days old with the same setup. Just make sure they aren't huddled under the heat lamp.
Here's one of my 4 week old Brahmas "Warbles"
