We are so excited that our chantecler just hatched ALL SIX eggs she'd been sitting on. (Interesting - we have a 1 rooster/12 hen ratio, and he somehow got to everybody!)

She seems to be acting like a good mom - unlike our last attempt with another hen, who pecked her one baby to death.

However, I'm fretting about water. The first chick hatched yesterday afternoon (almost 24 hours ago), and the last one this morning. As far as I can tell no one's been to the waterer. Their mom seems very frantic whenever they're uncovered. (Probably a good thing, of course)

I know the chicks can wait a bit - but... at some point should we put their beaks into the water the way you do with post office chicks? Or should we assume that their mama will see that this happens? We can't watch her all the time - and starting on Monday hardly at all.

Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks for any wisdom you can share!!

Laura

Mama will take care of it.
