I am interested to hear the possibilities here. This isnt my flock but a dear friends. I am out of suggestion so thought I would come here for advice. She lost 10 the last two weeks. Some were shipped eggs, some were her own.

Age- 8-14 day old chicks
symptoms- lethargic, not eating, or drinking, droopy wings. Chicks go from looking totally normal to thin, dehydrated looking, just laying there with in teh day. Near the end labored breathing then breathing just stops.
NOT SYMPTOMS- no nasal disharge, all chicks were hatched by her, no raspy breaths, no bloody stool. Not all chicks are sick. All her adult chickens are fine, but she did loose one to peritonitis a few weeks back. Culture came back as E.Coli in the fluid.
poop- slight diarrhea
feed- non medicated chick starter (I believe she feeds Purina). water has had Corid added for the past five days. Two died this morning.
Bedding- pine shaving.
temp- monitored by a digital

what has been done- She has added Corid to the water. When she notices them getting droopy, they are isolated. i believe she has given them egg and electrolytes by syringe at that point too.

So any other suggestions? If it is/was Coccidia, how long for it to run it course? She had one acting sick, but with in a day of it being on Corid, was fine. I cant find anything else to fit the symptoms. She is worried now that the hen she lost died of something else. Is apparently had lesions in its digestive/reproductive tract on autopsy too although peritonitis was noted as cause of death. thank so much!!

They mite not be able to find the food a water dip their beaks in it and add vitamins crush the food fine. If this doesn't work get a dropper and hand feed them.

its likely cocci. corid will kill all 9 strains of the coccidosis
.give the treatment time to take effect. in a few days they should be coming around. hope this helps.

Thats been done. They apparently eat and drink just fine until they get droopy. Then nothing!

Will they still get sick and die while ON Corid? The two that died this morning woudl have been drinking it for 5 days already? Ill have to check how MUCh she is putting in. I know she is using the liquid... anything else it could be?

I have one chick that is not as active as the others, is leaving eyes closed a lot and just not moving around awhile lot. Any advice, or ideas on what I might can do?

Id be interested to hear others responses to. My mind always goes to Coccidia after a chick brought it home over 10 years ago..... Ive been safe since! Here, random chicks were dying before and after she started with Corid. Her home breds have been safe coincidentally enough. Its been the chicks from shipped eggs....

I have went through this myself with the ones surviving about 15 days making it and doing fine. I still don't know what it was, cocci was my guess. at the time I was using a medicated chick starter, hatching eggs, having chicks shipped in people stopping to get chicks, etc.

how I cured it: (hope this helps)
I stopped selling, hatching and buying chicks. I then separated any that looked weak to a separate freshly sterilized brooder (1 part bleach 5 parts water, but let it dry out). I checked each chick for any pasting on their bottoms and cleaned as needed. I added sugar to their water for 3 days, then vinegar for 3 days (1 tablespoon per gallon of water) and I switched from medicated chick starter to medicated turkey starter. this seemed to cure the problem after about 1 and 1/2 weeks.

each day I would check the "healthy chicks" and make sure to move the weaker ones.

on another note, bleach waterers every couple of days, some forms of algae are toxic to chicks. this will also help stop the spread of disease.

Thanks! I will relay that! Im not sure if she is incubating now... I feel so bad for her. Its heart breaking to loose new ones. I didnt think to tell her about the waterers. I am sure she rinses them out but not sure she bleaches them ( I never think to either for that matter- New chore for tomorrow!) Thanks so much!

I hope that information helps, as you well know in this business you always lose some. but at the same time its heartbreaking.
