My first year hatching fertile eggs, I've had 4 in the incubator. I know for sure that they are different hens fertile eggs that were laid with an already fertile egg that a brooder had been sitting on for roughly 18 days. When the first chick hatched and followed mama down the ramp in the chicken coop and couldn't get back up, I confiscated all the eggs left in the box, candled them and determined 4 were fertile. About a week later, the first egg hatched and 24 hrs. later I moved that chick into a tub with a heating lamp, food and water. Then 3 days later, the next one hatched. It's for sure a different breed (5 toes, French Faverolle) and after 24 hrs. put it in the tub with the other chick. The older chick started pecking at the younger chick, especially on the feet. Is this normal? Will this behavior escalate where the older chick could injure or kill the younger one?

They are just curious, try putting other things in the brooder to distract, maybe scrambled egg, a mirror, if you see the peck happen you can push off the offender. you can put a separation basket in between them for a bit, maybe a few hrs. It is best not to mix the 2 birds until one can walk away from the pecks.
