I've been so excited to get chicks and I'd been planning to get them February 2nd -- the first day that a local farm store would be getting them. But I just found out that another store close to me already has them! They're both from the same chain (IFA), just different stores. So... would getting chicks now be okay? I'm just wondering the risks and benefits. January is way earlier than when I raised my last flock of chicks.
I'm going to be brooding them in my garage with a heat lamp, and around 7 or 8 weeks I'll be moving them out to the coop. Here is the climate for my area:

I will be getting a Speckled Sussex, White Leghorn, Golden Sex-Link, Plymouth Rock, Easter Egger, Polish, Columbian Wyandotte, and Swedish Flower.

No issue we did that with our first batch. I made an extralarge brooder to extend the time in the garage due the cold. Not sure on your coop but if it is big enough for them to get some room you could section if off with cardboard if is still cold out. We run an extension cord for ours for the water and light in the winter and it works fine. I hope to upgrade this year and get power to the coops. I hope this helps. If you want a photo of my brooder I could send you one tomorrow.

That'd be great, aplummer101! Thanks!

Hope this helps. Like I said this brooder was built so I could keep the chicks in it longer during the winter. It works great and since it is so big I can easily take care of the chicks. I section off one side until they are about a week and then I open up both sides. I have heater in my garage now but before that I would put plastic around the screen for a week or so.
