chicks or ready to lay

I can get ready to lay hens for 6.5 or should i buy chickes

i dont know what I would do next time. Having them from chicks means they grow up with me there (my dog thought they were her babies and she still watches over them) but getting laying hens would mean no waiting, no heat lamp, no brooder, no chick starter.
