We're planning on putting out our 8-and 6-week-old's out soon, and only one of them seems comfortable sleeping on the roost we installed in their brooder. Will they sleep on the floor of the coop, or will they perch on the roost we gave them?

I got eight week old chicks few months ago and they all sat in one nesting box for a couple weeks LOL… I think they knew how to use the purchase but they rather stay warm altogether… Doesn’t take them too long though. I think it a couple weeks chicks will start to learn to perch but they might not do it full time.

Depends on the breed too I think, along with maturity. Some of our 3 month olds have been perching for weeks while others like piling up together below the perches. As they get older they'll figure it out!

If you have older birds roosting, they figure it out sooner. If they have a broody hen for a mother, she will get them up there even sooner.

I am in a do over. So raising chicks without older hens, they were on the floor, then on a small platform, then on a sawhorse. Interesting a week ago, I checked at dark and one was on the roost, and not a chick from the older group. The next night 4-5 are up there.

It is not a thing that you need to worry about, they will get there eventually.
