The only way to know for sure what is going on with these chicks is to take a very sick chick or a dead one to a state animal testing lab for a necropsy. Call you state agricultural office for the location of one nearest you.

If this is a virus, Marek's is a possibility, an antibiotic will do no good. If the chicks have been scratching around in the local soil, it could be coccidiosis. You would treat with a coccidiostat, the brand name depending on what country you live in.

There is also a chance this is something toxic or poisonous. Have you noticed any strange insects near the chicks. Some can have a neuro- toxin that can kill a chick quickly.

Mold exposure can produce the symptoms you describe as well as paralysis. You must be prepared to do some investigation to see if there is something dangerous such as a toxic compost pile or a machine leaking fluids onto the soil where the chicks have been hanging out.

I haven’t noticed any mold, and I try to clean their coop, feed, and water regularly. I pray it is not Marek’s because I don’t want to lose my whole flock. I am not sure when I would be able to send a bird off to get tested. I was just wondering if anyone had similar symptoms and how I would go about treating them first.

Swollen belly and twisted neck sounds like a victim of poisoning. Raspy voice sounds like a respiratory illness. Legs paralyzed and thrust forward sounds like one of the avian viruses.

An antibiotic only works on bacteria. It won't do a thing for poisoning or a virus. You can try vitamin E and B-complex as those can strengthen nerve connections.

You can also treat for coccidiosis to be safe although you make no mention of diarrhea being a symptom.

I haven’t seen out of the ordinary poop from any of them. It’s just brown with white and I looked that up and it looks normal. I can check more to see if I see abnormal poop or diarrhea, but as of now their poop seems to be fine. Even the chick I have isolated has normal poop.

If they have normal poop, would you treat for respiratory if one sounds raspy to be safe or vitamin deficiency?
