I have 2 8 week old BR's and 1 8 week old buff and 4 10 week old silkies. The 3 bigger girls will use the roosts during the day just fine but at night they all huddle up on the floor. Should I put them on the roosts for a few nights and see if they figure it out or will they just figure it out on there own?

They will figure it out on their own. It's not a problem if they're not sleeping in nest boxes. Chickens are given roosts because they naturally roost.

From the pic it looks like your roost is next to an open window. If this is open at night, they probably won't like the air movement, except in hot weather.

i had a little stick in with my young chicks they were like a week old and they were roosting but give yours some time they will figure it out and for younger ones the roost should be lower to the ground so they can get on it you said the 3 biggest ones go up there the younger and smaller ones may not be bale to get up on the roost for young ones you need a small roost and some birds like sleeping on the ground to huddle and they keep each other warm

Thanks.
I close the window at night but it is still gettin kinda chilly at night here in Minnesota. So I suppose huddling up with the silkies at night helps. As long as there's no prob with it I'm fine with where ever they wanna sleep. (Just not the nest boxes) thanks again

Thanks farmer boy. The bigger girls are actually younger. The other 4 are silkies. I don't expect them to ever get up there. But a do have a roost close to the ground for them too.
