I've always used them. I built them when they were a week old before they came in, so they were there when I got them. They are 1 year old the 15th.

Chickens sit in the nesting boxes before they lay their eggs.
They make like a ditch hole so that they sit in it.
My chickens do it all the time. But I use wood shavings.
Maybe try that and see what happens. I did use hay for a little and something similar happened.

I think what's happening is that in the brooder I put hay in and they would scratch the hay and so there's hay in the nesting boxes so they think "oh, hay! SCRATCHING!!!"

I would try using different bedding......what about laying aritificial grass carpeting in their boxes..?? Or pine shavings?

Sorry, just saw the shout out this morning. I agree with the others...photos of your interior will help, and maybe try other bedding material.

I can't right now it's pitch black outside i have 8 huge nesting boxes (3 chickens will plenty of room in each)

Is there a front lip at least 3" tall to keep bedding in the nests?
