Chicks suddenly died

Sorry about the sudden loss, must have shocked your kids but good for you for trying to find out why!
In Nov I purchased 9 chicks from a store.... my options are limited and I wanted to try some DP birds and intro new blood. 100% have done well.
Not knowing the cause is really really frustrating, better luck next time.
As an aside, years ago our beloved pink and grey galah died exactly the same way you described; much later we found out from a local vet that a batch of poisoned seed hit the supermarket shelves in our area and many families lost their parrots, we thought it was something we did.

I wondered if you were Down Under when you used the term Chooks, smile. Many of our Aussie members do.
Sounds like you have a pretty good handle on what happened. God bless the kids, they were trying to help, smile. Sounds like you have a good plan to start over again. Keep in touch and let us know how it goes on a new thread called something like .. My chicks are the best!
Sincerely,
Karen

I don't want you to feel criticised, but I'll just tell you that I won't even let my 8 - 10 year old grand children touch my chicks unless I am right there to supervise, and then, I make them sit on the floor. I may be over protective, but chicks can be squirmy, and on more than one occasion, I've seen a chick squirm and end up on the floor when being held by a startled child.

My babies arnt suppose to touch the chicks unless im there but my older children have been doing this stuff for a long time, they helped raise our chooks and ducks very well. We arnt experts at all but have raised a few baby chicks and never experienced anything like this before. But we will sort it, my kids understand death and all that and as upsetting as it is its a part of life but would definitely would like to avoid this happening agaim

I think it is great you and your kids are doing a hobby together and they are learning animal husbandry. Do y'all have stuff like Future Farmers or similar clubs for kids? The only way to teach compassion to animals for children is to show them . Good luck

I hatched them out and some of them would start to jump up and suddenly die, does anyone know why ?
