Chicks vs Cheeps? O.o

Just wondering why do we call them chicks instead of cheeps?

They sound like they are cheeping. They look like cheeps more than chicks.

Why don't people call them cheeps instead?

Er, cause it's a shortened (smaller) version of the word chickEN. It became popularized as an abbreviation for the word chicken in middle English. It has no connection to the sound they make.
